Chapter 18

As I walked across the street, I saw that a coroner’s van had arrived, and I picked out Harris’s truck parked in front of Bexley’s.

“Well, that only made things less clear,” I said as I walked into Bexley’s and joined Steve and Ramirez.

“From the caller?” Steve asked.

“Yeah.” I quickly gave the pair Mr. Gillan’s account of what he’d witnessed.

“So, he heard some shots fired, maybe four. Then a pair that he saw the muzzle flashes from, then a lone one. Gaps between all the groups of maybe twenty or thirty seconds,” Ramirez said.

I nodded. “That’s what he said.”

“It doesn’t sound like a shootout,” Steve said. “You would think it would just be a bunch of rounds popping off. Chaos and then nothing.”

“Yeah, so like I said, less clear than before. And I talked to the night manager of the liquor store for a minute or two. The guy didn’t hear anything, and while they have multiple cameras, none extend much past the front door. He offered up a view of what was caught, but considering what he’d said about what they capture, I kind of doubted we’d have any luck there. So, I just told him that I’d check back in if we wanted to have a look at his cameras. Did anything come out of here while I was over there?” I looked toward the hall, and Gomez was still snapping photos. To my left, the secured door behind the counter was standing open.

“We have an empty pistol holster mounted under the counter by the main cash register,” Steve said. “That’s about the only thing we really found out here. And what if anything that tells us is another mystery.”

“What about the room there?” I pointed.

“Just more gold. Whether any is missing or not is anyone’s guess,” Steve said.

“The store manager is going to come down to lock up when we’re wrapped up here. Maybe he can have a look and give us a better idea of what was taken.” I pulled in a long breath. “Either Forensics is going to have to find something, or we’re going to have to get lucky with Tech. I saw Harris’s truck outside. Is he checking out the security system?”

“I think he’s in the main office back there,” Ramirez said.

“I’m going to touch base with him quick. Let him know what the store manager gave me.”

I headed for the back office, again minding the bodies that were still where they’d been lying when we originally arrived on scene. I found Harris in the office, standing behind Bexley’s desk.

“Looks like they got the camera hard drive,” Harris said. “And maybe a computer.”

“Yeah, that was what we were thinking, and from my conversation with the general manager of this place, there was a hard drive in here for the cameras. I guess some kind of internal camera system. And nothing that allowed remote viewing from off site.”

“Well, that’s going to be a bust as far as video unless we find the thing. Has anyone checked out nearby dumpsters?” Harris asked.
